MEDEA awards for DCU's MSc in Education and Training Management students

Deirdre Flood and Paul Maher, past students on DCU's MSc in Education and Training Management, were both successful in the recent MEDEA awards held in Brussels last November 2011.

Both Deirdre and Paul were among eight students who chose to produce an educational video as part of their dissertation in the Masters and Education and Training Management programme under the supervision of Yvonne Crotty.

MEDEA is a European competition supported by the Lifelong Programme of the European Commission. It was established to reward excellence and creativity in media in education, to encourage innovation and good practice in the use of media. The criteria used to judge the quality of submissions to the MEDEA awards include pedagogical quality, use of media, aesthetic quality, usability and technical quality.
MEDEA attracted 115 entries from 28 countries with 74 judges at the helm from 22 European countries.

Paul Maher (MSc in Education and Training - E-Learning) - First Class Honours Degree, received a 'very highly commended' award for his video "Simply Music".

Simply Music wins "Highly Commended" European Award

for it's use of Technology in Education.

European Medea Awards 2011

On the 24th November 2011, Simply Music received a "Highly Commended" European Award for its use of Technology in Education as part of the MEDEA Awards Ceremony, which took place during the Media & Learning Conference 2011 in Brussels.

This European competition rewards excellence and creativity in media in education and this year the competition attracted 115 entries from 28 countries.

Aim of the MEDEA Awards:

The aim of the MEDEA Awards is to encourage innovation and good practice in the use of media (audio, video, graphics and animation) in education. The awards also recognise and promote excellence in the production and pedagogical design of media-rich learning resources.

The MEDEA Award for User-Generated Educational Media 2011 honour the best entry submitted by teachers, students, learners, parents, professors, individual or organisational representatives in primary education, secondary education, higher education, adult education, vocational education and/or training.

Ceardlann ar Léiriú Cnagtha is ea Simply Music, ina gcuimsítear Teicneolaíocht Idirghníomhach agus Léiriú Ceoil Beo. Ceapadh é go speisialta chun tacú leis an gcuraclam ceoil don leibhéal bunscoile do dhaltaí agus múinteoirí agus faigheann sé tacaíocht ón gComhairle Ealaíon agus tá sé faofa ag an Roinn Oideachais agus Scileanna. Cuireadh an tsamhail le chéile chun an fhoghlaim le haghaidh stíleanna cognaíocha éagsúla a chur chun cinn tríd an teicneolaíocht a thabhairt isteach mar uirlis foghlama. Tá an t-ábhar bunaithe ar 3 shnáithe den churaclam bunscoile don cheol:

1. Ag Éisteacht agus Ag Freagairt
2. Ag Léiriú
3. Ag Cumadh

An tSamhail 'Simply Rhythm' (Ceardlann 2 Lá):

Tá sraith ceardlann 2 lá curtha le chéile ag Simply Music laistigh de gach scoil, ina bhfuil 2 cheoltóir ghairmiúla atá ag obair laistigh de chomhthéacs na scoile in éineacht le grúpaí na ceardlainne.

Léirítear 2 sheisiún ceardlainne gach lá le dhá ghrúpa ranga éagsúla. Tugann na ceardlanna seo gnéithe de cheol an churaclaim le chéile taobh leis an léiriú ceoil. Faigheann gach grúpa 3 sheisiún ceardlainne agus mar bhuaicphointe an tionscnaimh ag an deireadh bíonn léiriú beo ag na daltaí agus na ceoltóirí.

Forbraítear na ceardlanna ar aon dul le céimeanna forbartha cognaíche na leanaí laistigh den churaclam bunscoile. Déantar iad a mhiondealú de réir na gcéimeanna foghlama mar atá leagtha amach i gcuraclam ceoil na bunscoile. Tá an t-ábhar cognaíoch, ó thaobh ghnéithe léirithe na ceardlainne agus leibhéal na hidirghníomhaíochta, oiriúnach do chumais an aoisghrúpa ábhartha.

Baineann na ceardlanna úsáid as an teicneolaíocht agus an léiriú in éineacht le chéile chomh maith le réimse ionstraimíochta cnagtha (Boomwhackers ina measc, ar an scáileán agus den scáileán) agus forbairt de ghnéithe forbartha gutha agus rithimeacha freisin (gníomh-amhráin etc.)

Chomh maith leis sin laistigh de na seisiúin tugann Simply Music isteach cineálacha éagsúla den nodaireacht cheoil agus struchtúir rithimeacha mar atá sa churaclam ceoil agus atá oiriúnach don aoisghrúpa ar leith atá rannpháirteach sa cheardlann.

Baineann an cheardlann úsáid as an teicneolaíocht chun na daltaí a chumasú ionas go mbeidh muinín acu ina gcuid léirithe agus le foghlaim faoin mbealach le greim ceart a fháil ar gach uirlis agus faoin mbealach chun iad a sheinm i gceart. Foghlaimíonn siad faoin mbealach le hoibriú go neamhspleách lena n-uirlis agus faigheann siad tacaíocht ón teicneolaíocht, a sheinneann a líne shéiseach nó rithimeach sa chúlra chun tacú leo agus chun an leanúnachas a choinneáil sa léiriú.

Oibríonn na ceoltóirí leis na daltaí chun a muinín agus scileanna a fhorbairt agus coimeádann gach leanbh, trí fhoghlaim a dhéanamh de ghlanmheabhair, sraith de phatrúin rithimeacha / shéiseacha agus mar thoradh air seo eascraíonn píosa ceoil a léirítear beo laistigh den scoil ar an lá deireanach den cheardlann. Leanann na ceoltóirí ag tabhairt tacaíochta agus ag cruthú ábhar nuálaíoch de réir mar a théann an cheardlann ar aghaidh agus spreagann siad an nuálaíocht ceoil a thagann ó na leanaí atá le bheith curtha isteach sa léiriú deireanach.

Na torthaí a eascraíonn as an gceardlann ná go mbíonn níos mó eolais ag na daltaí faoi chnaguirlisí, forbairt rithimeach agus ghutha agus eispéireas ceoil trí bheith rannpháirteach i léiriú beo le múinteoirí agus grúpaí ranga eile.

Cuirfear na cnaguirlisí (le haghaidh suas le 60 leanbh, a bheag nó a mhór) ar fáil chomh maith le ríomhaire, teilgeoir agus scáileán, agus Córas Fógartha Poiblí.

This August 15th, 2011 Simply Music in association with The National Concert Hall will run its 5^th year of successful In-Service 5-Day Teacher Training Courses, approved by The Dept. of Education & Skills.

Last August, Simply Music in association with The National Concert Hall ran its 4^th year of successful In-Service Teacher Training Courses, approved by The Dept. of Education & Skills.

Simply Music has just completed a very successful week of Simply Music Interactive Technology Music Workshops in The National Concert Hall. These 5 Day “In Service Teacher Training Workshops” are approved by the Department of Education & Skills and were attended by over 20 very enthusiastic teachers and musicians from around Ireland.

Simply Music: Music Performance Workshops through Interactive Technology

Simply Music is an innovative way of working with percussion and rhythm within the primary school curriculum. The model has been designed to enhance learning for different cognitive styles through the introduction of technology as a learning tool.

This 5-day training programme (now in its 4th year) for primary teachers will focus on how music performance can be used in the classroom environment using both traditional and technology based methods.

Presented by professional percussionist and digital media designer Paul Maher, areas covered will include creation of an interactive music session, use of technology in the classroom, rhythmic performance development, the history of percussion styles/percussion instruments and the development of vocal, melodic and rhythmic development elements (action songs, etc.).

All primary school teachers are welcome and previous musical experience is not necessary.

Simply Music is a Percussion Performance Workshop, which incorporates Interactive Technology and Live Music Performance. It has been specifically designed to support the music curriculum for primary level for both students and teachers and is supported by The Arts Council of Ireland.

The Workshops:
Simply Music has designed a series of 15 x 2 day workshops within each school, which incorporates a professional musician working within the school context alongside the workshop groups.
Simply Music delivers 2 workshop sessions each day with two different class groups. Each of these workshops brings together elements of curriculum music alongside musical performance. Each group receives 3 workshop sessions and the entire initiative culminates in a live performance by the students and musicians.
The workshops are developed in line with the stages of cognitive development of children within the primary curriculum. They are broken into the learning stages outlined in the primary music curriculum. The cognitive content, both in terms of the performance aspects of the workshop and the level of interactivity is suited to the abilities of the relevant age group.
The workshops use a combination of technology and performance with a range of percussion instrumentation (including Boomwhackers, on and off screen) and also development of vocal and rhythmic development elements (action songs etc.)
Additionally within the sessions Simply Music introduces different forms of musical notation and rhythmic structures as per the music curriculum and which again are suited to the specific age range participating in the workshop.

The workshop uses technology to allow the students to gain confidence in their performance and to learn how to hold and play each instrument correctly. They learn to work independently with their instrument and are supported by the technology, which plays their melodic or rhythmic line in the background to support them and maintain continuity in the performance.
The musicians work with the students to develop their confidence and skills and each child retains through rote a series of rhythmic/melodic patterns which in turn develop into a musical piece which is performed live within the school on the final day of the workshop. The musicians continue to support and create innovative material as the workshop progresses and encourage musical innovation from the children to be incorporated into the final performance
The outcomes of the workshop provide the students with an increased knowledge of percussion instrumentation, rhythmic and vocal development and musical experience through participation in live performance with teachers and other class groups.

Simply Music recently visited 5th and 6th Class pupils in Rathmichael Primary School, Shankill, Co. Dublin. We had a very successful few days rehearsing and performing 3 concerts for all the school children and also invited parents along too. We have just completed a very successful week of Simply Music Interactive Technology Music Workshops in The National Concert Hall. This 5 Day “In Service Teacher Training Workshop” (in it’s second year) was approved by the Department of Education & Science and the Learn & Explore Department of the National Concert Hall. It was attended by 18 very enthusiastic Teachers and Principals from Drogheda, Dublin, Kildare and Mayo.
